Symptoms of a Concussion After an Accident

Concussion After an AccidentAny type of accident can result in serious injuries. Some, such as broken bones and deep lacerations, are immediately apparent. Others, though, do not always present symptoms right away. These are known as hidden injuries because they are easy to overlook. Of all the hidden injuries, concussions are some of the most common. If you have been injured in an accident, it is important to know the signs of a concussion and to seek immediate medical treatment.

What is a Concussion?

The CDC defines a concussion as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by the brain shaking rapidly within the skull. When the brain shakes so violently it hits the walls of the skull, it causes a chemical change and can also significantly damage the brain’s tissues.

Many individuals mistakenly believe that concussions are mild injuries since they typically do not pose a life-threatening risk. The fact there’s no such thing as a small brain injury must be recognized. It is imperative that you get medical assistance after an accident, even if you don’t believe you were harmed. Concussions can cause bleeding or brain swelling, both of which have the potential to be lethal if not carefully and immediately treated.

What are the Signs of a Concussion After an Accident?

Concussions do not always present symptoms right away. Many people think they have only suffered a concussion if they lost consciousness. Although it is true that loss of consciousness, even for a few seconds, is one of the main signs of a concussion, there are others, as well. These include:

  • Headaches or feeling increased pressure in the head
  • Ringing in the ears, a condition medically known as tinnitus
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Blurry vision
  • Seeing stars or spots
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss, particularly around the accident
  • Delayed reactions
  • Slurred speech
  • Issues with concentration
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Issues sleeping
  • Sensory problems with smell and taste

After an accident in which you hit your head, you may notice one or more of these signs. On the other hand, you may not experience any of them. Regardless of how you feel after an accident, it is critical that you see a doctor. A doctor will fully examine you and will know what signs of a concussion to look for. Seeking medical treatment will first and foremost, ensure your injuries do not become worse. Seeing a doctor will also document your injuries, which can serve as evidence in any future injury claim you file.
