Common Faulty or Defective Products that Have Caused Injuries

Americans spend billions of dollars each year on consumer goods, everything from kitchen appliances to clothes to bicycles. Unfortunately, some of these products are defective in design or manufacture and end up harming people.

The US government runs a recall website that every person should check periodically. It contains the latest recalls issued by manufacturers when they become aware that many of their products are defective. In the meantime, we want to draw your attention to some common products that have caused injuries over the years.

Kitchen Gadgets

Your kitchen contains many electrical gadgets that can malfunction, not to mention many sharp implements that can injure people when they fail to work properly. The following have all injured people:

  • Pressure cookers
  • Blenders
  • Potholders
  • Pans
  • Knives

Children’s Clothing

All clothing can pose a danger, especially of catching on fire. However, we tend to see a lot of recalls involving children’s clothing. A child’s nightie, for example, could restrict the child’s neck, causing suffocation. The biggest risk, though, are buttons that a child can bite and possibly swallow or choke on.

Medical Equipment

Devices and implants should work effectively and safely, and to this end all medical devices go through rigorous testing before they are used on patients. However, we have continued to see people injured by defective:

  • Knee implants
  • Hip replacements
  • Transvaginal mesh
  • Breast implants

Patients need to have the defective implant removed, so they must undergo another surgery, which costs considerable sums of money and can also take time to recuperate.

Auto Parts

Most car accident injuries are caused by driver error. For example, a motorist will fail to pay proper attention because she is reading a text message, which causes her to drive right into the backseat of a car stopped at an intersection.

But defective car parts can also cause injuries. Over the years, we have seen widespread recalls involving defective tires, air bags, seat belts, and steering columns. Children can also suffer injuries when child and booster seats malfunction or are installed improperly due to inadequate instructions.
