The holiday season is a time to reconnect with family and recharge. With school out and many workers on vacation, the roads will be congested. Even worse, inclement weather like fog and rain can make it harder to see while driving.
At Dolan Dobrinsky Rosenblum Bluestein, we care about your safety. For that reason, we have compiled this list of safety tips so that you and your loved ones can arrive at your destination safe and sound.
Give Yourself Plenty of Time to Get to Grandma’s
When drivers are in a rush, they make mistakes. The best way to ensure a safe trip is to give yourself plenty of time. If you are traveling a long distance, make sure to include time for pit stops. The children will be antsy if you don’t.
Also remember to give yourself sufficient time to get back home. Traffic might be even worse as everyone is trying to get back home.
Don’t Drink and Drive
Everyone enjoys a little bit of eggnog during a holiday party, but make sure it doesn’t contain alcohol. If you want to drink, you absolutely should have a designated driver. Otherwise, call a cab or an Uber so that you are not driving. In other situations, the best option will be to crash for the night—but only if your host agrees to let you stay over!
Don’t Leave Gifts Visible to Thieves
Holiday shopping is dangerous enough. If you leave things on a seat, then someone might break into your car, even if it is locked. Instead, put all gifts in the trunk. If the trunk is already filled, then carry a blanket with you in the car. You can then put gifts on the floor and cover them with a blanket. This will make them invisible to thieves.
Drive Carefully in Rain and Ice
It probably won’t snow in Miami, but rain can cause the roads to become slick, and plunging temperatures overnight could make things extra slippery in the morning. Drive well under the speed limit in inclement weather and remember to make turns slowly. If you feel the car go into a skid, try to steer in the direction that you wanted to go.
