Campus safety and security

The lure of going to college in Florida is very tempting for many students. However, students should not overlook campus safety and security. According to U S News, security policies and protocols vary from one institution to the next. Current and potential students should assess their intended school’s safety measures to determine if their campus of choice offers the degree of security they expect.

Many colleges offer a variety of living accommodations for their students, ranging from dorm rooms to off-campus apartments. Even if the availability of these accommodations is scarce, there are still valid security issues that should be addressed. Student and potential tenants should find out if there are special security personnel, equipment and protocol in place to keep them protected from potential safety concerns, such as apartment fires, negligent maintenance issues and third party attacks. Colleges should also offer their students access to resources that can help them to find suitable and safe living arrangements while they are in school.

Campuses should also have ongoing training and educational sessions to keep students aware of all unsafe activity that is going on in and around the campus and their apartments. They should also provide ongoing training and education to teach students how to identify potentially dangerous situations and how to avoid them. These training should also reiterate actions that students can take if they find themselves victimized by a campus security issue.

Colleges and universities should also train their security personnel to be reactive instead of passive. They should be trained to identify potentially dangerous situations, such as abuse, assault and other hazards and dangerous conditions that could affect the safety of students. Security guards are the front line of defense for universities, states Security Magazine. They are able to prevent many dangers situations from escalating.

With the right actions, personnel, equipment and protocols, college and universities can enhance campus safety on and around their property to better meet the needs of its students.
