Preventing senior slip-and-fall accidents

Slip-and-fall accidents in Miami-Dade are a common source of senior citizen injuries. Although there are many factors that cause elderly people to trip, fall and injure themselves, many of them can be prevented. Reducing the amount of these types of incidents can reduce the risk of accident and injury to the elderly and make their surroundings less hazardous.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the likelihood of slip-and-fall accidents occurring can be lowered by eliminating many of the risk factors that cause them. Common factors that lead to slip-and-fall incidents are uneven pavement, rugs, mobility issues, improper footwear, medications and a lack of support equipment, such as handrails and grab bars. Elderly trips and falls can be reduced by accident-proofing the home and its perimeter, exercising to improve balance and coordination and getting regular health and vision evaluations.

A Place for Mom states that there are additional measures that can be taken to prevent seniors from slipping and falling. Elderly people should stop and listen to their surroundings. They should also look around for any dangers and potential hazards. Older people should not rush when they are moving around. They should remain calm at all times to prevent accidents. Seniors should also remain aware of their surroundings by looking up, down and eye-level at all objects before entering, exiting and moving about a room.

Seniors who find themselves at risk for slip-and-fall accidents should practice these safety measures regularly to keep themselves safe from harm and injury.
