Steps you should take after a slip-and-fall accident

Slipping and falling in a public space can be a bit embarrassing. You might be tempted to brush off the accident and say you're okay just so you can get out of there. This is not uncommon, but you need to understand that minimizing your injuries or rushing away from the scene could ultimately prove to be costly decisions.

If you are injured in a fall at a grocery store, in the mall or at a restaurant, there may very well be reason to suspect that a dangerous condition contributed to the accident, not simply your own clumsiness. While it can be tempting to just try and escape an uncomfortable situation, you will want to take a few crucial steps to protect yourself and your legal options after a fall.

  1. Take some time to examine your surroundings. What caused you to fall? Were there signs warning of a wet or uneven surface? Were there workers around you who may have seen the hazard already? If at all possible, you can and should take pictures of the area.
  2. Talk to witnesses. If there are people around who saw the accident or saw the safety hazard that caused the accident, it can be crucial to talk to them and get their contact information so that they can be reached later to verify or challenge certain details of your fall.
  3. See a doctor. Injuries suffered in a slip-and-fall aren't always evident right away. That does not mean they are not serious, though. Without seeking medical attention, injuries can get worse. Further, the longer you wait to see a doctor, the more difficult it can be to link the injuries to that accident.

There is nothing shameful about falling and getting hurt because of a dangerous condition that should not have existed. It is not something you should just ignore or chalk up to your own clumsiness because in many cases, it is the property owner who should have taken steps to prevent accidents.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a slip-and-fall accident in Miami, you don't have to be embarrassed or dismissive. You can discuss your options with an attorney and file a legal claim for the compensation you may deserve.
